Good to see all you guys still around after all these years! Got a complicated question for ya. I play in several leagues, with some of the same guys in each. One of these leagues has been in existence for upwards of 20 years, so there's lots of history and records involved. It was a very active 12 team, salary/contract, winner take all league when I joined 5 years ago. Over the past 5 years, I've made the playoffs 4 times (top 4 teams), won the championship once and was the runner-up last year. But, league activity has steadily declined over those 5 years for a number of reasons.

This offseason the commish has proposed dozens of rule changes, many of which involve mitigating the 'luck factor' by an increased emphasis on points, adding prizes for weekly high scores, season high scorer, so if a top scoring team gets knocked off in the playoffs, they basically still get a consolation prize.

Personally I hate this rule change but it seems to be gaining support. We could be going to as much as a 50/50 split between points/H2H. I am largely in favor of all other rule changes, but I think this one in particular really takes the fun out of the league. My team has been the beneficiary of good luck on a number of occasions (I actually won the championship on a nfl stat scoring change) and I think that my 'Iuck' has really pissed off some other owners who feel like they had better teams in some years, but choked in the playoffs. Overall I like the guys In the league, I like my team, but I am torn between sticking it out and bailing.

What would you do? Any arguments for or against points leagues? Am I overreacting here?

That's a tough call, Thurm. I was in a similar situation with a league that I play in. I haven't been in it for 20 years or anything, (more like 5) but the commissioners like changing rules based on "fairness." The same deal as yours, more rule changes to make everything balanced, trying to make all positions evenly balanced across the board. I feel that sometimes it takes the fun out of it, but at the same time, I see it as a new challenge with the same group of friends to overcome and conquer. I can see how you might feel about being singled out, and whether your buddies want to admit it or not, these changes are being brought about because the same person (you) keeps winning over and over. Think about how AWESOME it will feel to say, "look, you can change however many rules you want, I'll still kick your ass" – and then do it! I would take it as a complement that they see you as such a threat that they are even trying to do this in the first place.

I say, embrace the challenge, and try it for this season. If you feel that the fun is gone after this season, then walk away when it's over. But at least stick it out and give it a chance, otherwise you may be seen as "taking your ball and going home" IMHO.

That's a kind way to look at it I suppose… Take it as a compliment and accept the challenge. But I also don't see the rule changes as being done in fairness or balance. It's It seems to be to be an attack on an individual strategy. One that happens to be very successful. It's an attempt to micromanage the league.

These rule changes are also being proposed for this year, when the standard is to announce new rules at least 1 year in advance. The league fee is also being doubled, basically so the commissioner can reward the teams who follow the strategy that he approves of.

I know it might seem like I'm taking my ball and going home, but the more I think about it, the more i find it to be jacked up.

I might just create a new league with the same rules that we had last year, copy the rosters over and see who wants to join me. Just like Jerry McGuire…lol

I'm probably not a good one to ask as I just took my ball and went home. I was the commish since 2014… Won in 2004, 2007, 2009, and 2011 while losing the SB in 2008. Made the playoffs again in 2012 and made my "retirement" announcement last winter prior to week 15.

While I was the commish, owners still wanted to change or bend a few rules. They were a direct attack at my winning, strategy etc. I'm very liberated at hanging it up. I said if the draft date works I'll show up and be the draft bitch (enter picks), and be a neutral commish for league disputes.

I played in 2 other leagues since 2003… One I joined in 2009, won the regular season, finished 2nd in the playoffs and bailed. Told them I left because I didn't like the rules, lack of posts, etc. I still get crap for taking the cash and bailing… especially from the winning SB team as he had to host the draft and feed everyone in 2010:)

If I were you I'd probably bail. With my league the owners are split on my departure. Some are sad as I was the glue that held it together putting up daily posts/ articles/ draft reviews etc. Another few are excited as they feel they finally have a chance to win. You'll be fine with whatever you do, but I'm guessing you're out withing 1-3 years. Might as well leave on a high note. Win again and or never make the playoffs…. it really doesn't matter.

Looks like the scoring based proposals have been scaled back and won't affect final standings… the conpromise is that the highest scoring team will win a prize (less than the champ) and I'm ok with that.

Also everyone seems to be in favor of adding a travelling championship belt for the annual champ. The only potential issue I see with this is that all 12 teams are spread out across the country. Any of you ever do anything similar? Seems like a cool idea but skeptical that the raining champ will remember to send it off each spring.

Why would you want a "championship" belt if you don't have a live draft? Do you really think wearing your pretend football belt to work, on a date, or with your non fantasy football friends will be impressive?

We had a traveling trophy that was exchanged at the draft or prior.
