update on my current hardware/software/connectivity status:
laptop is repaired, virtually all meaningful data recovered, software beyond O/S not yet installed
new pc (whoopee) is no longer refusing to boot or to recognize the hdd; (maddeningly – long story) still no sound
new monitor is an improvement, but my eyes'll still only take so much of this per day, hence my extended absence here
hopefully all of this will get resolved in the coming wks…

sorry, still having pc issues – had another hard crash right after I made my last post in here …stronger fan & upgraded power supply seemed to be a fix (presuming it was an overheating prob) but I had another hard crash this past weekend …at least this time it came right back up instead of not being able to find the hdd but there are obviously things still unresolved …might be a faulty chip – we've replaced just about everything else but the motherboard …I'll try to get to it but don't count on me; I gotta prep for my BB draft too n' I just started on that…
smoother sailing (I hope!) once I get the laptop back (supposed to be yesterday but that didn't happen)

at least I solved the sound probs, which were a simple case of rampant stupidity (mine own)
onboard sound card didn't have proper driver so we added a plug-in card as a quick fix; then I kept plugging the speakers over & over again into the disabled onboard card & wondered why I wasn't getting any noise …what a maroon…
